Day 22 - My Favorite City

I am really behind - but I wanted to finish the 30-day blog challenge I started back in (cough, cough) November (cough.) Today is my favorite city and you know what? I haven't visited either of what I figure will be my favorite city one day - NYC or Chicago.  I love Fairhope, AL; Destin, FL; Seaside, FL.... but I really wouldn't go so far as to consider them "cities."  You want to know is honestly my favorite city?? This one:

I love my town! It is wonderful this time of year when you can sit out on patios/balconies at any number of places:

(terrible pic of me... but this is from patio at Bin 612)

And I love my town in the fall when you can spend Saturdays here:

Tailgating at MSU!  I love the fun Spring weekends here, the fabulous Fall weekends here, and everything in between.  I adore that I work downtown again.  I adore that we have a wonderful downtown and fun festivals and great local food and shopping.... and the best university there is... Mississippi State!!!! We are so lucky to live here.

Perfect? No. Things that need work? Sure. My favorite city ever? Yep. :)

Feb. 22 - Where I Work

Well, right now I work here:

This place has been so good to me the past year and a half - great folks, great company.

However, starting March 5, I will be the new manager here:

I am SUPER excited... and I sure hope you guys will come see me!  Any time is great, but you know what is coming up?? UnWINE!! I LOVED this event Starkville put on for the first time in the fall! They are doing it again March 22.  You can find a LITTLE info about it here - and tickets go on sale March 1! It will be a great time to do a little shopping downtown and a great time to come see me at Frock!

Feb 21 - A Fave Photo of Me

Well, this is hard... there aren't very many photos of me that I  LIKE... hey, didn't we just have this discussion?? The one in my 30 day blog challenge (not to be confused with the Photo a Day February - you keeping this all straight??) just said "Photo of me" and this one says "Fave Photo of  Me" so i guess they are a little different.  I am still going to cop-out though... this is my FB profile pic...

And I like it because I like the way Derek has his arms around me and I also like that for some strange reason, I look tall! Or taller. You know.

And this is one of my very favorite pics of me forever and ever... not because it is a great picture but sometimes pictures are just about more than how good they are OF you... but more because of what the moment was that they were taken:

And that picture will always mean so much to me. :)

Pinterest Weekend!

Well, this was what the forecast was for pretty much all of Saturday:

So I knew I was going to have to have to come up with a plan to keep the babies from being bored to tears.  So, I pulled up good ole Pinterest.  The girls and I picked out a couple of ideas and made a Walmart run!! We got the boys this, so they would have an activity too:

And I don't have any pics of them doing it, but they did! We had bouncy balls going all over the house! That kit is pretty easy to fool with, too - doesn't take long to do at all and just take water. Easy-peasy.

The girls made tshirts:

Very simple: colored tshirts and a glue pen.  They have all kinds of ideas for when we do those again.  It was easy and they turned out really cute.

They made really cool "paintings" out of crayons. These were a little more complicated, but not hard. And fun. We decided if we did them again we would probably try Crayola crayons.

Kirkland gluing on her crayons:

This is what it looked like after they were glued on:

Then you get out  your hair dryer!!

(by the way, I'm going to need some ideas about getting melted crayon off of linoleum. :/ )

Finished product:

Cute!! And last but not least, I made Lemon Bars from a Pinterest recipe for breakfast Sunday (we woke up late and didn't make it to church! Oops!) They were tasty and easy and all gone pretty quick!

Rainy weekend? No problem!!! :) Thanks, Pinterest!!

Feb 20 - Handwriting

Something with my handwriting laying right here...

And I have a little Derek handwriting right above it (he is sweet - but this was a "suck up" note when he was in trouble. Bad.)...

And I also happen to have a little Jaybird handwriting on my desk, too:

Feb 15 - phone

Well, it's funny- "phone" was today's photo and this is what happened to Derek's today. Luckily it still works! We will be getting a case tomorrow!!

Feb 13 - Blue

This is the best I can do... Blue- well, it's really green. Drive through this Monday for Kirkland's doctor's appointment, then to Starkville, then to Scooba for the basketball game!

I am behind!! Feb 12- inside my closet

What a mess!!!

Feb 11 - makes me happy

This face makes me happy... All my babies' sweet smiles do. I wanted to post a pic from mine and Derek's day today because it DOES make me happy to see other people so happy- but i've just had this face stuck in my head!! Missing my babies bad... Ready to be home!

Feb 9 - Front Door

It's the Mize center... Front door to the Hump... Where MSU put a WHOOPIN' on TSUN tonight, y'all.

Day 21 - A Pic of Me

I don't have many pictures of just me... I'm not a big fan. So, I looked back on my phone and these are literally the only two I had out of 740 pictures of JUST me... and they are both funny - so why not just humiliate myself on my own blog?? :)
I do LOTS of these pictures:

And these pictures are usually sent to Mar, or Jamie, or Laura with the caption "Can I wear this?"  (This particular one was a no... Lawd, my hips look 4 ft across in it!!) I question almost every single thing I put on.  I will always see myself at 200 lbs.

And then there is this picture which is just hilarious.....

This was taken by one of the girls at Deep South Pout... my sister in law Megan was wanting to order a denim shirt but she wanted to see it on me! So I got to model. I felt SO stupid.. (see?  I look stupid too!)

I really just love this picture...

Not because it's a great picture (we all have demon eyes) but because it was a great night. And those are my sweet babies.  And I've just really been missing them. I love those smiley faces much better than mine.

Feb 8- Sun

Well, this is the best I could do today. Sunset behind The Grill.

Day 20 - Nicknames

Well, my NAME is a "nickname."  Most people know now that my real name is Mary Virginia... Ginnie was the "nickname" that my parents knew they would call me from the very beginning though.  If I'm not mistaken, my father is the one who came up with the "-ie" ending for it.  So knowing all that makes it funny that my only actual nickname is "MV" or "Emvee" - both are from Mary Virginia.
Derek doesn't have a nickname, really. When he was little, his family called him "DJ" - short for Derek James.  I (and lots of people) call him "D."  He told me once he doesn't like to be called "DC" and I've never really gotten an explanation for why. But there ya go.
My kids all have nicknames we call them... Kirkland is Kirky-Dirk, Kirky, or KCD.  Emily's is Mimi - and that came from how Kirkland pronounced her name when she was born.  I also call her Mimi-lou, and even Mimi-lou-who sometimes.  She also gets Emmy and Em a lot too of course.  Jay is easy - Jaybird! I call him JB sometimes too.  Josh is also easy - Joshy.  I also call him Tater sometimes - I can't remember why or how but years ago we called him Joshy-tater and Tater just came from that. And as a group - they're "The Babies." :) I also love the names that they've given Derek's family - Neal is Grumpsy. Jeanne is MawMaw NuNu or just NuNu (she hates it.) Megan is Aunt Meggie and Zack is Uncle Z.
My photo of the day for today is "sun."  I'm gonna have to work on that later. :)

Feb 7 - Button

Today's photo of  the day just said "button."  I had to think about that one - I have no buttons on today!  Then I looked down...

Esc.... ESCAPE!

What a great button.  Escape! :)

Day 19- Something you Miss

Hmmmm.... Ok, this is one I have to think about.  And, it's another one that could go kind of depressing.  I mean, I miss tucking my babies in every night.  I miss taking them to school in the morning and picking them up in the afternoons.  I miss my PawPaw.  I miss my stepdaddy.  I miss my inlaws. We all miss a lot of things, don't we??
But, some not so serious things I miss:  summers off, having a tan, Pirate Pool Days, my 18 year old body, Quiznos, bread, JC Garcia's, leaves on these dead trees, Laurie and Nicole, free time, the beach, football season, sideline passes, my paycheck (it's already gone! ha!), having my own car....
Alright I think I rambled off enough - I've looked at the list and it gets a lot less depressing for the final 11 topics!  And I have to get my photo of the day in today too!!! :) I'm keeping up with all this finally I think!!

Feb 6- Dinner

This WAS my dinner. And THAT is the fabulously beautiful Laura that shared it with me. :)

Day 18 - Biggest Regret

I regret... forgetting to buy spinach.  I made one of our family's favorite pasta dishes Saturday and I forgot to buy spinach!! It's a great stir in with the pasta sauce and a great way to get my kiddos to eat spinach because they don't really notice it.  I'll give you the recipe, too, so you can try it! It's modified from a recipe I got from one of my besties, Laurie, YEARS ago. It is super easy, it doesn't really qualify as cooking, and if you are a "foodie" then you'll just make fun of all of the pre-made parts. But we like it! Don't forget the spinach and live with regret like I am! (This blog post could have been really depressing - I figured, nah. :) The spinach is actually optional!!)

Laurie's Pasta

1 jar of alfredo sauce
about 12 slices of bacon - give or take
Chicken - I use the bags of already cooked, grilled, cubed chicken you can buy - but I have also just cooked a couple of breasts and shredded those
Mushrooms (optional)
Box of frozen spinach (optional)
Angel hair pasta

I use already cooked bacon.  I put it in the oven on broil to get it started, then take it out and crumble it.  Put that into a pot with your chicken and mushrooms (if using.)  I hit this with a little Italian seasoning and garlic.  Saute this for a few minutes just to get the chicken warmed through.  Add in the jar of alfredo sauce.  Stir well, turn to low to heat while  you make your pasta.  Cook spinach like the directions say to.  Serve on the side to mix into your pasta while you eat it... so tasty!

And by the way, my biggest regret is not filing a police report from OCH the morning of 8/4/09 when I was encouraged to.  I think my life would be FAR different now if I had... I would give almost anything to go back and change that.  But oh well... all we can do is keep looking forward.  The past is the past. :)

I will still get my Photo of the Day today, too - it's "Dinner" so that won't be til later!!! :)

Photo of the day - 10 AM - Emily... About to leave for church. "Don't take my picture."

Day 17 - and a New Challenge!

Day 17 is "something I am looking forward to."  Well, honestly, right this minute I'm looking forward to 5:00. It has been one of those days that just started off wrong and hasn't perked up much!! I am also looking forward to getting to hang out with my husband tonight at Dave's for an early birthday celebration! Dave's gives you free pizza for your birthday and since we can't go Friday and we LOVE trivia, we're going tonight.  Then tomorrow I get to go watch the EMCC men's basketball team play at home - they are undefeated in division play! And EMCC's men's teams are also undefeated when I am there! :) And, to top this week off - it's a babies weekend and my husband's 30th birthday!! I am looking forward to having dinner with them and Derek and friends - and we are even going to have a pinata! How fun is that?? So if I can just get through the 8-5 parts of this week, the rest of it is really good!
Ok, I am going to join my sweet friend Laura in "Photo a Day February!"

So, here is my blah view for today (and almost everyday from 8-5.)

You should go ahead and just give in and do the Photo a Day, too. You can do it on your blog - or I have also seen people posting it to their Twitter and/or Facebook.  This MIGHT even be easier than the 30-day-blog-challenge-that-is-taking-more-like-100-days. :)

Day 16 - My dream house!

I actually live in my dream house - or pretty dang close. Seriously. I LOVE our house.

That picture was from last summer when we first moved in - before the bushes were trimmed, etc.  I love our house. I have a running list of things in my head I want to do to it - HOWEVER, it isn't ours. :) We are just "caretakers" of this sweet, wonderful, (my dream) house.  God just stepped in and blessed us beyond belief with this house. I feel lucky every single day that I wake up in it. It has real hardwood floors, transom windows, glass door knobs, old wooden windows, a fireplace, built-ins, everything. Everything I want. :) The MSU campus is right out of my back door. Really. We walk to Eckie's Pond (one of our very favorite places on campus) and we walk to the football games. We can hear the band practicing in the fall. The chiming from the chapel is how I keep up with time in the mornings getting ready. We have pecan trees that we spent hours under this fall with the kids (and whoever else wanted t!) picking up pecans. We have that GINORMOUS magnolia tree to the right of the house that is amazing for climbing. There are surprise lillies. There are irises. We have a porch with rocking chairs and a swing. I love our house. L O V E.
If we could stay here forever and ever I would love to knock out the wall and the closet at the end of my kitchen and extend it into the back den... I would put a bar across to separate it. I would change the counter tops and flooring in the kitchen. I would put glass in some of the cabinet doors in the kitchen and maybe even take some of them out! The electrical system in the whole house would have to be redone. I would paint all the very white walls a warmer color.  I would free up the transoms (they're painted shut.) I would paint the shutters and front door a different color. I would replace the sconces in the living room and bathrooms. I would replace the light fixtures in all the bedrooms. I would change the chandeliers in the living room and dining room and kitchen.  I would put cabinets or shelves above my washer and dryer.  So, see? Yep, it's my dream house but I definitely have a list! :)
So... if we didn't stay here forever and ever?? Well, I would probably want a new house.  Derek and I are not the handiest couple of folks  you've ever met.  We would need low maintenance. We aren't big yard people either - a little yard with a GREAT patio/deck area would suit me fine.  I love the Camel Back duplexes at Belle Grove here in Starkville, or the houses in Maison de Ville, for example.  My dream house would definitely have a bungalow look with lots of character.  Someone pinned this house on pinterest the other day, and I promptly repinned it - it is WONDERFUL!
It's a Southern Living house plan.  I just love it.  As long as I have something unique, I'd be happy.  I wouldn't necessarily like a new house that looks just like the one 3 houses down in a neighborhood with no trees. THAT would be my anti-dream house!! Character is key!! :) But for now, we're going to just keep being really happy and thankful for our sweet dream house we get to go home to everyday! We love visitors - come sit on our porch with us this spring!!

Day 15 - A Bible verse

One of my very favorite verses -

Psalm 30:10-14

New International Version (NIV)

10 Hear, LORD, and be merciful to me;
   LORD, be my help.
 11 You turned my wailing into dancing;
you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy,
12 that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent.
LORD my God, I will praise you forever.

Day 14 - A Picture you Love

Now come on - I can't pick one picture! I have a TON! Going to be a long, picture filled post - some of these are random, but I'll explain. Most of them I love because of a back story of some sort.

The very first one I thought of - Josh was in RARE form one day on the patio at Pepper's - he was keeping everyone entertained. He kept raising his shirt and rubbing his belly - I don't know. But it was FUNNY. Still makes me laugh to think about it.

The very first picture ever of all 6 of us:

This one, just because of where/when it was taken:

One of my very favorite places in Starkville - heck, anywhere - told us congrats on their sign!

Derek took this while sitting on the desk at WCBI one night right after we got married - he was so excited to be wearing that ring. :) He is holding the green marker he always held for me when he was on air, and his hand is on his scripts.

From just a fun afternoon at our house climbing trees... I love the afternoons we don't even leave house but have so much fun hanging out.

This picture is funny because we have a joke about Derek and Emily being BFF.  Sometimes she tries to act like she could care less about him, but somehow Emily is usually where Derek is. And they actually get along so well... it's kinda funny (she is my clone, after all!)

I mean, cause this is just sweet.... Joshy will occasionally come climb in bed with  us in the mornings when he gets up... this one morning he actually fell back asleep.

From Super Bulldog Weekend, Dan was wandering around the outfield at the baseball game. Faba and I had to get a pic with him!!

From our trip out to OK last summer.... I just love this pic of Jay getting to play at the science museum with Derek, Grumpsy, and Nunu... would just love it if my kids got to see them more. Such awesome grandparents!

Just because this made my husband SO happy... and ok, me too. :)

I LOVE this picture of Jay - I think he is just the most gorgeous little thing... my sweet boy.

The very first Thanksgiving I ever made for my sweet babies - we sat on the floor bc I didn't have a table and chairs and I had to buy aluminum pans because I had no casserole dishes and all our plates were mismatched hand me downs and we were so broke - but I was determined to make a big meal for them. It was just me and D and the kids - you could barely tell anyone had eaten when we were finished!! It was so good! I have a pic somewhere of us sitting on the floor but I can't find it!

I love football. I especially love Mississippi State football. So getting to be at the Gator Bowl with Derek was pretty fabulous. I had a great spot for one of the touchdowns and the 3 person hip bump afterwards! So while the whole experience was pretty awesome, this is just a good pic from that trip/game.

The tornado outbreak on April 27, 2011 will go down in history as a terrible day in the south... Starkville was very lucky that day but places within 40 - 60 miles of us on any side were not so lucky.  I'll never forget that day. We were without power for awhile, but not nearly as long as they projected.  And looking out of my kitchen window that evening after work, I saw the most beautiful sunset.  God is always there, no matter what, and He's always in control.

From the day after our wedding - sitting on the porch with all of my inlaws finishing off the keg. Seriously. But it was just so fabulous having them all here, sitting on my porch. (unfortunately Megan isn't in this picture!!)

And last but not least - my goofy husband sent me this at work one day of he and Patty (one of the outside cats.) He bent down to pick something up on the porch and she jumped on his back! And he took a picture and sent it to me! Nut.
